Take up and Athletic Hobby for Fast and Permanent Results

Fall in love with the gym or...

As a trainer, my superstar clients are those that fall in love with the gym. They love the gym culture and atmosphere of people working hard to improve their physiques. They are the ones who go to the gym on the days where they don’t have an appointment with me resulting in 5-6 workouts a week. At 1-2 hours each workout, this comes out to 5-12 hrs a week of moderate- to vigorous activity. In reality, this is what is needed to get FAST results. You can get slower results by doing less, which is completely okay as well.
Most people new or returning to the gym won’t fall in love with it. If you don’t currently go often enough, chances are you don’t like the gym. And that is totally okay. I of course, love the gym and everything about it, but I understand why most people would not. Lifting weights pointlessly in a testosterone filled room with big egos or becoming one of the many mindless hamsters peddling away on the cardio machines is how many people see the gym and its members.

So if you don’t like the gym, then you need to find an athletic hobby. With our increasingly sedentary lifestyles we are burning less and less calories. In addition to eating a healthy diet with a caloric deficit, you also have to move more in order to lose a significant amount fat. It becomes very hard to lose fat by adjusting you nutrition alone especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle. Even if you workout 3-4 days a week, it can still be tough for those sitting at a desk all day.

Find your new athletic hobby

So if you can’t get a combined 6-10 sessions of weights and cardio in a week, then you NEED to find something else that will allow you to burn the calories and fat off your body.

Here are some activities I have personally seen clients and friends take up and get amazing results:
  • Mountain biking
  • Running races
  • Mixed martial arts training
  • Rowing team
  • Cycling
  • Hiking
  • Yard work, yes yard work.
  • Joining a recreational team sport: soccer, basketball, hockey, etc.

So why are people so successful at fat loss with these activities?
From pure enjoyment or the will to improve they will:
  • Trainer harder
  • Train longer
  • Train more often

This could be due to self-motivation or from being pushed by a coach. Either way, you are much more active than just doing minimal workouts in the gym a few times a week. Often people get hooked with one of these activities and results just happen. Soon this becomes a passionate hobby and the results that simply came with being active are now permanent.
