Targeting belly fat is often the focus for many gimmicky weight loss videos and products. “Melt away those stubborn pounds of belly fat!” or “Washboard abs in 8 weeks!” are much-overused catch phrases to get people to buy these useless products. So what makes your body store belly fat as opposed to storing fat in the legs, arms, or any other areas?
The side-midsection areas are often referred to by people as the “muffin top” or “love handles”. Over exposure to insulin will cause you to gain fat in these areas which basically translates into eating too many “bad carbs” or carbs in general. As fitness professionals we test body fat by using calipers to measure in millimeters the subcutaneous body fat thickness in specific regions. For the “love handles” we measure just above the iliac crest on the side of the torso called the suprailiac site. Fat accumulation occurs in other regions of the body specific to the overexposure or lack of certain hormones.
If you make a significant reduction in carbs over a 2-4 weeks period, you will see your “love handles” get smaller faster than other areas.
So if you reduce your carbohydrate intake, you reduce your exposure to insulin. In fact, you can control insulin to a major degree simply by eating less carbs. If you can handle eating a very low carb diet say only meat, healthy fats, and vegetables, you will eventually depend much less on insulin to deal with high blood sugar. Although many people find this diet too strict to maintain and give up before they reach their goal, you will notice the biggest difference in “love handle” fat loss. An all-out low carb diet may not be the best choice for some people, but the point is, less carbs equals less fat on your sides.
